Kei Shimaoka was born in Mashiko in 1978 and graduated from the Tochigi Prefecture Ceramics Guidance Center in 1997, the same year he started as an apprentice to his grandfather, Tatsuzo Shimaoka. He completed his apprenticeship and started exhibiting in 2003. In 2005 he was adopted as the second son (designated by his grandfather to continue carrying on the family/studio traditions.) He took over the pottery in 2007, after the death of Tatsuzo Shimaoka. He has shown work at many important exhibitions in Japan.
Kei will demonstrate the techniques of throwing, making, and decorating, which he learned from his grandfather, especially the rope pattern techniques. Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to try out these techniques and to see up-close how he makes his beautiful work.
The workshop price includes the cost of the clay. We will bisque fire any pieces that students make in the workshop.
You should have wheel-throwing experience to take this workshop. Make sure to bring your own basic wheelthrowing tools.
