Ceramics offers an amazing, even overwhelming array of surface design techniques. Starting with the clay itself, possibilities present themselves; choose porcelain for vivid color, sculpture clay for a bold effect.
Each step in constructing a piece lends itself to different surface design choices, from wet clay, to leather hard, to bisque. Make your marks with a brush, cut your lines with a tool. Try scrafitto. Carve, model, pierce your piece. Use stencils and monoprint your surface design. On bone dry clay add wax inlay, try batik. Moving on to your bisqued piece, choose washes and glazes and stains, or nothing at all.
Devote yourself to one technique or give yourself over to them all. The world of surface design never fails to fascinate and delight.
