Drop molds are an incredible and accessible way to make handbuilt shapes. Join Portland artist, Sam Morgan, for a hands-on introduction to this technique. Through demonstrations and step by step instructions, we’ll work with cardboard and rigid foam boards to make our forms, expand out the shapes and fabricate composite constructions. This technique lends itself to many surface textures and decorative processes.
Sam Morgan is a Full-time instructor with 28 years as Lead Ceramics Instructor at Portland Community College, Cascade Campus.
“Although my artwork touches on many things, two of the primary themes are sensuality and perception. The lushness/richness of the forms, materials and surfaces celebrate our physical world. The tactility of the work, which varies from abrasive to velvety, use of color and play of hard and soft edges have emotional bearing. These pieces aren’t merely displays of materiality but represent dimensions of consciousness. “
The workshop price includes the cost of the clay. Firings are not included. However, once the work is dry, students that take regular classes at Seward Park Clay studio can bring them back to be bisque fired.
Make sure to bring your own basic handbuilding tools.
