Collection: Chris Scamehorn

Chris comes from southern Michigan and has had a strong connection to clay from a young age linked to an interest in geology and the natural environment. This material curiosity continues to drive much of his making practice and he is fascinated by clays, glazes and firing. He has had many fine teachers, and his ceramic journey includes colleges in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids and a Masters degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. He currently manages Seward Park Clay Studio and sells his art at Pike Place Market.

Chris has done large scale work excavating and using local materials to build site-specific installations and also has built and performed with ‘whistling water vessels’ that he builds and plays. His marbled pots are ‘of a piece’ with his geological interests and are in some ways a miniaturized environment.
